Barbie Jem and The Holograms Other dolls

My 2 cents: Jem and The Holograms & Barbie live-action movies

April 25, 2014

I bet you have all heard about the two upcoming live-action projects that involve Barbie and Jem and The Holograms. At first I was super excited about the Jem movie because I actually imagined a cool, 80s inspired movie about rock bands and glam. But then I started following the official blog of the movie and realized the project just might end up looking and feeling like a low budget tv movie from the 90s. Remember the 1995 Fantastic Four movie? :)) Well something like that. At least that’s how I feel about the Jem and The Holograms live-action movie.

I just can’t imagine a big budget movie filming and casting so fast, in just a matter of weeks and that’s exactly what it’s happening with this movie. Look, they already have the cast and the first images from the production!

Jem – Aubrey Peeples
Kimber – Stefanie Scott
Aja – Hayley Kiyoko
Shana – Aurora Perrineau

As far as I know they were looking for actors just a few weeks ago. I’m not an expert in casting and movie production but aren’t things going a bit fast? And in this case fast is not a good thing, in my opinion. Maybe I’m wrong… Maybe. I wish they would have taken a longer time to think this through, to get some good writers, directors and actors and really make this movie a big blockbuster. With all these movies coming out that are based on fantasy books, toy lines and comic books, a Jem and the Holograms movie would have been a big win for any big studio and a great way to start a series of movies based on The Holograms and The Misfits. Oh, well… I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what will become of this movie.

The Barbie live-action movie doesn’t stand a chance in my opinion. I love Barbie way more than I love Jem but she’s no big screen live-action movie material. She makes a great toy, a great cartoon character but thinking of an actress that will portray her in a “serious” movie just makes me cringe. And that’s really all I can say about thins project.

I do hope I’ll change my mind after the two movies come out, but so far they just don’t look or seem a good idea to me. :(

I agree i’m kind of scared of the numbers of people who will want to see a Jem Movie so fastly done .
The casting looks good … For a tv show , but for a movie ???

And Barbie as a real actress on big screen …

A movie movie? Like, spend-a-paycheck-on-popcorn-and-soda movie? I would say something about how negatively surprised I am, but I could see it being a box office hit. The boys have all their old toys and magazines made into movies, no harm in letting the girls have their fun.

I love Jem, so I was super excited for this. It has the potential to make an epic movie… but not how it looks like they are doing it. My hopes for this are draining quickly the more that gets revealed about it. My only hope remains with what might come of a new doll line… but if they screw up characters (like what is with Kimber’s hair in that poster??!!) I’m not sure I’m even going to want it, which is upsetting because I have signed every freaking “Bring Jem Back” petition I’ve come across. I want Jem back- but I want her to still be them Jem the original fans know and love.
