2017 Barbie year in review – Hits and Misses

December 31, 2017

The last day of 2017 is upon us and I want to quickly tell you what my Barbie hits and misses of 2017 are. In this post I will talk only about the collector Barbie dolls, but I will come back with a playline top in the following days.

Let’s start with the misses.

From left to right:
Natalia Vodianova Barbie doll – I was completely unimpressed by this doll. I am not a big fan of the real model, but I also think that her look is boring and uninteresting. A big meh from me.

Andy Warhol Barbie doll – I love the Superstar face, but this doll did nothing for me. There is something about her that I simply do not find wow.

Quinceanera Barbie doll – Too child friendly for me. I am sure she made a lot of young girls very happy when they received her, but she simply is not for me.

Gabby Douglas Barbie doll – Ok, ok. I admit. I am not into sports so I have no idea who Gabby is. Shame on me! I know! Sorry. I am simply not in the target for this doll.

2017 Birthday Wishes Barbie dolls – They are not that bad, but I am so sick of pink puffy dresses. I want something different.

2017 Hello Kitty Barbie doll – At fist I was excited about her, but the more I saw IRL images of her I realized that I simply do not like this doll. A pass from me.

And now the hits.

Again from left to right.

Ballet Wishes Barbie doll – Ok, she is technically from 2018, but I wanted to mention her because she is already available from some dealers and I think she is really cute. She kind of grew on me.

Totally Hair Repro Barbie doll – Loved the original, love the repro. I wish Mattel will decide to release more of the iconic 90s Barbie dolls as repros.

Blush Fringed Gown Barbie doll – one of my absolute faves of this year! This doll is just perfection.

Black & White Tweed Suit Barbie doll – A very elegant skilstone. Love her hair and makeup.

Blush and Gold Dress Barbie doll – Love her! Love the colors, the combination of soft pink and gold. I only wish she had earings.

Justice League Mera Barbie doll – This is such a gorgeous doll. I am a comic book fan so she is right up my alley.

Blue Chiffon Ball Gown Barbie doll – I am putting this girl here just because I like a lot her design. IRL her dress is sopoorly made, but she is one gorgeous girl.

The Global Glamour Sorcha Barbie doll – Another one of my absolute faves! Gorgeous in every way possible.

Selma DuPar James Barbie – Another amazing girl that has a problem IRL: her dress is ill fitted. :( But she is too gorgeous not to be included here.

Hair Fair Barbie Repro doll – Another amazing repro. It’s amazing they chose this set to bring back. Love it!

Day To Night Repro Barbie doll – My absolute fave repro of the year. Need I say more?

Gigi Hadid Barbie doll – Unlike Natalia, I really like this doll and I love her oversized top. I wear such tops so I was surprised when people would call this doll “hobo like”. Say wut??

2017 Look Barbie dolls – Many do not care for the AA Look doll, but I love both of them. I really must have a different fashion sense than a lot of colletors. :))

2017 National Barbie Collectors Convention dolls – These 2 are some of my fave convention Barbie dolls. I also enjoyed the dolls from the other conventions and did not see what the fuss was about them.

Graduation Day Barbie – A cute basic doll that I think is way better than the Birthday Wishes dolls for a young collector.

DreamHouse repro set – I only wish it wasn not so expensive because this set is so cute!

Wonder Woman movie Barbie dolls – Each of them is amazing! Ok, maybe the Wonder Woman one is underwhelming, but I like them as a set.

2017 Holiday Barbie dolls – Such an improvement from last year! Love the star in the back.

Wonder Woman Paradise Island Giftset Barbie and Ken – The only things I dislike are Ken’s short shirt and his painted hands. Again this set is in this top because I like the original design and concept.

King of the Crystal Cave Ken Doll – Another great doll with painted on gloves. No, Mattel. Just no. A great design nevertheless.

So this is my 2017 top. What is yours? What were your fave Barbie dolls this year and which ones did you not enjoy so much?

Let me be first to comment. Here’s my hit and miss list:
Misses: Andy Warhol Barbie – I find her kinda tasteless, Gabby Douglas Barbie – not a fan of her sculpt, Hello Kitty Barbie – such a disappointment, Blue Chiffon Gown Silkstone Barbie – the quality is appalling for the Gold Label doll, King Of Crystal Cave Ken painted arms just a big ”no”!
Hits: Hispanic Holiday Barbie 2017 – I was finally able to afford a doll with a Mermaid sculpt, yay! Sorcha Barbie doll – the best Global Glamour doll ever, Blushed Fringe Gown Barbie – drop dead gorgeous doll and Carlyle did an amazing job on her, Mera Barbie – stunning redhead, the repros of Superstar era dolls – I’m just a big fan of them, that’s it!
Overall ”what the heck?” of the year – the overuse of Karl and Millie face in the collector line, stolen Golden Galaxy and YSL Barbie heads sold on taobao.com, the OOAK of Claudia Schiffer doll, which never will be mass-produced.
Looking forward to the new year and its surprises! Happy New Year, Ada! Thank you for all your hard work! )))

Yikes, it has been a poor showing last year for Barbie in Australia. Of those pictured we only saw four dolls in store (no wonder Mattel tried to placate the market by releasing MTM curvy here before the US).

Fingers crossed that Day to Night will be available here (since Totally Hair was).

Mattel keeps moaning about declining Barbie sales, quality issues aside, geez, we wonder why.

I’ve only purchased three Barbie this year. My hits: 2017 Holiday Barbie, Selma of the Harlem Theatre line, and the third Andy Warhol outfit – I do not like the Superstar mold. I may pick Sorcha up soon; I like the gown but not the facial screening (I have the other dolls in the line).

Thanking for uniting so many passionate doll enthusiasts. Looking forward your blog in 201i8!

Oh my goodness! We all have such different tastes. I can’t even begin to describe how much I love the Natalia Vodianova doll. She just arrived recently and it took me a while to warm up to her. I wanted to rebody her onto something articulated but after working on my soap opera blog with her as a star, I realise that I adore her as she is. Tonight I decided she was the perfect Bond girl for my James Bond doll (who got a wonderful new Skyfall tux for NYE). I’ve redressed her and she is just spectacular. I don’t understand the general dislike of the Hello Kitty doll. I took her out of the box, redressed her for NYE as well, pierced her ears and gave her some amazing red earrings and she is absolutely drop dead gorgeous. I see a major part for her in my soap opera blog as well. I also love Gigi but she is also redressed for NYE (and looks gorgeous). I also love Gabby Douglas – such a cute face! I love all the dolls I bought, to be honest. My requirements are for dolls that can be soap opera stars, so my tastes are very different from others.

I was just looking back at some of the photos I have taken of the Natalia Vodianova doll and I think they might be my best doll photos ever because she is so amazingly photogenic. I’m starting to think she’s the most beautiful doll I own. I might not feel that way down the road – but for now, yes.

It is interesting how tastes vary. The 2018 Ballet Wishes is cute. Will a Hispanic version be released?

Hello Kitty Barbie is very overpriced. Definitely a miss. I like the older versions better, and they were cheaper. I would say the fashion packs were a hit. It’s nice to have some licensed graphic tees for dolls.
